Lately......

This blog is starting to remind me of the long distance relationship I have with my childhood best friend in Florida. Because of the craziness of motherhood, ministry, jobs, and life in general we go months without talking. When we finally get a free moment to chat, our conversation lasts for hours because we have so much to catch up on.
I love this space here, but I feel badly that I check in so infrequently that I post a million pictures from the last few months! Hope you don't mind if I share some recent highlights.......

We hosted a volleyball night at our church gym recently. It was so fun to do something active together! The kiddos even played nicely together the whole night!

Just like so much of the country, winter just will not end here in PA. It's been bitterly cold for months which means the snow we get never melts in between storms.

This is one of our recent snowfalls! Crazy, huh?
The forecast shows that we may possibly reach 40 degrees this weekend, though! I can't wait!

These kiddos are the love of my life......

Our school recently held a special day at our local university for all the elementary kids. We got to attend one of their basketball games for free (popcorn included). The boys really loved their first game ever.

Last month, I was able to attend the IF: Gathering online. What really got me excited after such rich teaching and encouragement was the new site, IF: Equip. Thousands of women around the world are currently reading through the book of John. Each day, we read a portion of a chapter then watch a short discussion about it on the website. I can't believe how refreshing it has been to read this familiar book again. I've been reading from the Gospel Transformation Bible that I wrote about a while back. The notes with each passage really trace the beautiful thread of redemption throughout the entire Bible.
If you don't currently have a plan for your reading, I'd definitely sign up for the daily emails.

We had so much fun snow tubing last weekend! Even the boys loved it!

Best buddies!!

Our little one is growing bigger. This is a picture from about 22 weeks. Later that day, we found out that we are having a.......

Supergirl!

We're still a little shocked to be entering this new world of girliness! I'm sure I'll have much more to share on that topic in future posts!!

That's about it for now! I've had a few other posts bumping around in my mind. We'll see if this pregnancy brain can get them actually written one of these days!

I'd love to hear how you have been lately! Feel free to update me in the comments or over at our A Steady Rain Facebook page!

Lessons from the trenches.....

I've been MIA lately. And I really do mean "missing-in-action". I've been in the trenches with new school routines, church pressures, broken relationships, almost-2 year old antics, and a thousand other little battles each day. I've felt overwhelmed and burnt out. My main goal for each day has simply been to survive.
Maybe you can relate? Maybe you're exhausted, fed-up, and stressed too. While I am not currently sitting in a life of peace and tranquility (in fact, it's taken me 4 or 5 tries to get this post written), I have been slowly learning some important things during my last couple weeks of silence here.

1. God's blessings are found in both the beautiful and broken things in life. It's easy to find them perfect weather or unexpected gifts. It's harder to see His goodness in back-to-back viruses brought home from school. Instead of constantly desiring to get rid of my struggles, I'm learning to seek His unchanging character in the midst of the circumstances surrounding me.
I've been loving John 16:33 lately,
"In this world, you will have trouble, but take heart! I have overcome the world!"
I can rest in His triumph over all sin! He is already the conqueror over my chaos and stress, and that, my friends, is a blessing!

2. My life can be so busy with good things that I fail to choose the best thing - Jesus. This lesson seems to be hitting me from everywhere lately. On Monday nights, I've been taking an extended period of time for Bible study and prayer after the kiddos are in bed. I'm reading Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World. It's been on my bookshelf for quite sometime, but I have been too busy to read it!
Martha wasn't busy with sinful or vain things, in fact, Scripture says that she was busy with serving - ministry. She was stressed with the preparations that needed to be made for her special guests.
It was this "ministry" that overshadowed her opportunity to rest in and learn from the One she was serving. She, in essence, was to busy for Jesus.
God needed me to hear it again, though, when I listened to this interview with Kevin DeYoung called When You're Too Busy to Be Godly. If you have 9 minutes, it's definitely worth the listen, but he brings out that one marker of being too busy, is failing to have time for quiet, uninterrupted time at the feet of Jesus. We have to have a strict idea of our priorities to determine what is best vs. simply good. He says, "Until we know the things we won't do, we won't actually do the things we say we should do."
We have to have a strict idea of our priorities to determine what is best vs. simply good. He says, "Until we know the things we won't do, we won't actually do the things we say we should do."
Saying, "yes" to everything doesn't make us  better Christians and it doesn't make life more fulfilling. Jesus says that true fulfillment, peace, and joy comes from saying "yes" to Him!
Practically, this has caused me to refine my priorities even more. Honestly, I've been a little embarrassed and even uncomfortable as I'm learning to say "no" to good things be able to say "yes" to the Best Thing.
I'm trying to remember what my husband has said several times lately, "Sometimes, one of the most spiritual things we can do is say 'no'."

If you've made it to the end of this post, thank you for letting me share a little of my heart with you today. I'm so very thankful, God has given me this little online space to document His work in this season of my life.
I'd love to pray for you if you are struggling right now. Please share in the comments or send me an e-mail. We can lift one another up as we transform our Martha-hearts into Jesus-seeking hearts one day at a time.

Gospel Transformation Bible

My husband recently posted this preview video for the brand new Gospel Transformation Bible and I just had to share it here.

Doesn't it look great?? I can totally identify with the comment about the Old Testament being the "bad news" and the New Testament having all the "good news". I'm excited to read the whole of Scripture looking for Christ and Grace in all 66 books!

We've already pre-ordered ours and you can get yours HERE
Do you use a study Bible?? What is your favorite?

Motivated exercise.....

I'm currently 1/3 of the way through a 90-day fitness challenge called Bikini Mommy Body Challenge! I certainly don't plan to wear a bikini this summer (or ever), but my muscles can definitely use some toning after two pregnancies!

While it's been great to see my body change during the last four weeks, I've struggled a little with my motivation. You see, I HATE exercising. I can think of so many things I rather be doing instead of my 45 minute cardio. A few minutes more of my beauty sleep would feel so much better than 20 mountain climbers. If it wasn't for the accountability from the others in the group and the fact that I really DO want to be healthy and fit at my 30th birthday, I would have given up long ago.

When I keep my goal in mind, I'm properly motivated to endure the pain of working out!

Take that to a spiritual level. My old nature HATES to love, forgive, serve, etc. I'd rather do so many other self-focused things. Simply trying hard to be a good Christian will never work. I'll fail or give up in no time.

I John 4:19 says, "We love because He first loved us." If you've spent any time in Christian circles, it can be easy to gloss over this verse. It's not until we grasp the vastness of His initial love that we can start to be motivated in the right way. I may look like a relatively good person to those around me, but my heart is desperately wicked. I have no hope to reach God's perfect standards before OR after salvation.

Christ's sacrifice is the essential daily motivation for every aspect of my life. When I'm overwhelmed by His undeserved grace, I look at "good works" as a desire rather than a duty.
Applying the gospel to everyday is a spiritual exercise motivated by Christ's unbelievable love for me!

Cares....

Are you worried, stressed, or concerned today? I can relate! That's why I'm taking time to meditate on this verse today.....

"Casting all your care (worry, stress, concerns) on Him,

For He cares for you!"
I Peter 5:7

Are you singing today?

Praise the LORD.
How good it is to sing praises to our God,
how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

Psalm 147:1

Refuge....

Recently we had a guest pastor speak in our morning service. He repeated one phrase over and over, and it has been on my mind and heart ever since.....

Lord, YOU are my refuge....

My safety and strength does not come from books, money, image, blogging, family, friends, or ministry.

Whatever trials or struggles I may face.....Lord, YOU are my refuge....

As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless, He is a shield to all who take REFUGE in Him.
Psalm 18:30

I Love the Lord.....

I Love the Lord....

For He heard my voice;
He heard my cry for mercy!
Because He turned His ear to me,
I will call on Him as long as I live.

Psalm 116:1
